LONDON, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Swiss legend Roger Federer said here on Wednesday that he felt nervous as he was going to play his last match as a professional tennis player.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner announced last Thursday that he would retire from Grand Slams and the ATP Tour after the Laver Cup held from September 23 to 25 in London.

According to the Laver Cup format, each player competes in at least one singles match during the first two days, but Federer revealed earlier that he would only play one doubles match.

"I don't want to mess with the tournament but at the same time I know my limitations," explained the 41-year-old Federer on Wednesday. "And this is why I asked Bjorn (captain of Team Europe Bjorn Borg) if it was okay to play just one doubles."

Federer said he also asked John McEnroe, the captain of Team World as well others involved.

"Everybody said that was fine. So here I am trying to prepare for one last doubles.

"Obviously I'm nervous going into this. I haven't played it so long and I hope it can be somewhat competitive," said Federer.

Federer's partner in the doubles match hasn't been confirmed, but many are expecting Spaniard Rafael Nadal could be the one.

"I think it could be quite a unique situation. As long as we battle together, we always respect each other. The families, coaching teams always get along really well.

"To go through a career that we both had to come out the other side of being able to have a nice relationship, I think it's maybe a great message as well to not just for us but maybe even beyond that."

The 2022 Laver Cup is the fifth edition of the tournament where six top European players against six of their counterparts from the rest of the world. .
