China's Wu Yibing defeated Italy's Marco Cecchinato 7-6 (5), 6-3 to reach the Geneva Open quarterfinals on Tuesday, setting up his next round against Germany's Alexander Zverev. 

Wu gained the upper hand in a fierce first set when he took the tiebreaker 7-5, and managed to lead the second 4-3 before storming to victory.  

Wu, 23, is currently ranked 59th in the world, the highest among male singles players from the Chinese mainland. He has never played against the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist before.

Zverev, currently ranked 27th, has won the ATP Finals twice in 2018 and 2021.
