General Assembly to Elect Economic and Social Council Members from Western European and Other States Group

The General Assembly meets today to hold by-elections for members of the 54-member Economic and Social Council from the Western European and Other States Group. 

According to a 5 May 2025 note verbale from the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations addressed to the Secretariat (document A/79/901), the following members will relinquish their seats on the Council at the end of 2025:  Liechtenstein in favour of Germany, for a term of office expiring on 31 December 2026; and Switzerland in favour of the United States and Italy in favour of Switzerland, for a term of office expiring on 31 December 2027. 

In effect, Switzerland will remain a Council member for the term of office expiring on 31 December 2027.
