La Chaux-de-Fonds and neighboring Le Locle were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009 for their urban planning shaped by the watchmaking industry. In 2020, the craftsmanship of mechanical watchmaking and art mechanics, jointly submitted by Switzerland and France, was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
