U.S. President Donald Trump has downplayed the political impact of Viktor Orban's election defeat, saying he is not concerned by the outcome despite having openly supported the Hungarian leader during the campaign.

Speaking to journalist Jonathan Karl, Trump indicated that Orban had been trailing significantly and suggested that even a stronger personal involvement from his side may not have changed the result. ?I wasn?t that involved in this one? Viktor's a good man, though,? he said, adding that he was unsure whether a visit to Hungary would have made any difference.

At the same time, Trump struck a conciliatory tone toward Orban's opponent, Pter Magyar, whose Tisza party secured a commanding parliamentary majority in the April 12 elections. ?I think the new man's going to do a good job - he's a good man,? Trump reportedly said.

Orban's loss, after 16 years in power, has been widely interpreted as a setback for Trump, given their close political alignment on issues such as immigration, relations with the European Union and ties with Russia. In the final stretch of the campaign, U.S. Vice President JD Vance was sent to Budapest to support Orban's bid for another term.

Magyar, a former insider in Orban's Fidesz party who distanced himself following a corruption scandal in 2024, has pledged sweeping changes. He has promised to tackle entrenched corruption, dismantle patronage networks and restore Hungary's relations with the EU, while maintaining a conservative stance on migration.

Following his electoral victory, Magyar met with Hungarian President Tams Sulyok on April 15 and called for a rapid handover of power, with the aim of forming a new government in early May.
